I like the idea of a police officer being there to protect the kids. I believe it gives them a sense of being safe. It is good use of time to have someone there that the kids can see as an officer of the law. Kids feel safer with someone in uniform there. Thanks for being considerate of all the kids in J-Town. It is a nice addition to the small town atmosphere that J-Town has always had. Another plus is that traffic moves better and it is safer because of the officer being there.
Thanks for having someone there that can help our children be safe and get to school. Great idea.
I would say that it is a necessity. There is only one moderately safe pedestrian crosswalk currently in Jordan. If you check the JI archives a few years back there was heated discussion on pedestrian safety at crosswalks and I still fear for anyone attempting to cross. Thank you to those protecting our children.
I think it is great to have the officer at the corner as a crossing guard rather then actually directing traffic. I think the 4-way stop works well there.
The proposed 282/21 changes are intended to facilitate traffic flow - which usually means allowing more cars to pass through the intersection faster. That doesn't sound like a kid-friendly environment to me. As the intersection is now, some cars and trucks run the yellow and red lights. Increasing the traffic flow virtually guarantees that more cars and trucks will run the lights.
And how many kids actually stay on the curb until traffic is stopped? They're kids, and they do kid things.
Ray, I take your post about the effectiveness of the 4-way stop to be a reference to the intersection in front of the high school. That observation is spot-on. When everyone has to stop, there's no incentive to stretch the yellow light. Having an officer on the intersection lets people know that they'll get in trouble if they try to cheat.
The high school intersection is a bit of a special case because so many students drive to school. Then there are busses, teacher's cars, and traffic from the middle and grade schools. The 282/21 intersection carries less school traffic, but more general traffic. Further, the traffic mix on 282/21 includes many more trucks than would be seen in front of the high school. If the 282/21 intersection is widened, traffic through it will surely not go slower.
One of St. John's arguments for building the new school was because of pedestrian safety. The children wouldn't have to cross the street for lunch or mass. The goofy part is now they run the kids across the street for recess or phy-ed. The teachers (hopefully smart enough to look both ways before crossing)should park in the old school lot and walk across and use the parking lot in front of the new school for phy-ed or recess.
I do run in all directions at that intersection and many times with trailers behind my truck. It would be better if there were proper turn lanes.
