Social obsession

Considering the popularity of recent shows such as Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, Charmed, Eastwick, Heroes, and such, and movies like Twilight, The Sixth Sense, Constantine, and Paranormal Activity (not to mention upcoming films), do you think our society has an obsession with the paranormal or supernatural?

Yes, absolutely. My lovely wife clearly does. She can be found on the couch watching "Ghost Hunters" daily. It is interesting, I'll give her that much. And I have fun watching it with her sometimes. Every day is a bit of an overdose for me, though.

We need someone to protect us and give us hope and we don't feel that coming from our government. So superheros start to appear in society, if they are chasing ghosts or jumping canyons. Look into the story of Evil Knevil and check the movies of that time and you will see a comparison.

The need for heroes I can understand. What I've noticed is an increasing prevalence of stories involving ghosts or magic or demons - or other dark dangerous things that science can't explain or counteract. Heroes can save people from a terrorist attack or mass murderers or whatever else. Why the fascination with things we can't explain?

People wonder. It's really that simple. Mysteries encourage curiosity. The truly unexplained peaks people's interest. We want to believe. Why not believe in something that cannot be explained? To not be curious is to abandon one's inner being.

When we immerse our daily drudgery as well as feelings of being helpless as it relates to many facets of our life… into a physical sense, it ends up materializing as a ghost, at least lately it does in the movies.… an unexplainable entity of power and mystery that is tied to humanity… there is usually a Hero or Heroin that is attainable or like us in some ways, who battles this unexplainable entity or helping it to go away, often times being victorious, only to be faced with another of equal or greater evil, in sequels. The scare lets us feel human and allows us to vent feelings of despair in the form of this ghost, who is able to be defeated. This is just my take on the subject, not that it bares any credible resource.

For the most part, the media is getting our minds off of the wars and economy and such, and allowing us to escape into a world that is surreal, but we are able to rationalize that it could be, or could it? I much more prefer fairies and mystical pictures, however can get wrapped up in ghost whisperer or Charmed as well. We want to believe, this is true and so we should.
