Police dismiss parking tickets given during art festival

No votes yet

A few parking citations given out by police at the Mini-Met ballpark during the Jordan Art Festival have been dismissed.

The ballpark parking lot near the intersection of Rice and Water streets filled up during the Jordan Valley Bike Tour, which was attended by about 300 bicyclists. Overflow parking trickled into the street leading behind the outfield fence and into the parking lot.

"Rice Street at the entrance to the lot is too narrow to allow for parking," Jordan Police Chief Bob Malz wrote in a report to the city council. "There were some parking tickets issued because motorists parked along the street once the lot had reached capacity."

But there aren't any no-parking signs along the street, after the event, the Jordan Public Safety Committee met and discussed the issue, deciding that the city should post no-parking signs in the area.

"I just felt that we didn't have the proper signage, so we needed to do the right thing," Malz told the council.

The city council, in the absence of councilmembers Barry Ullmann and David Hanson, approved the new no-parking signs. Money will come from the police budget.

"This would eliminate any confusion in the future," Malz wrote.

Six signs and poles will cost a total of $300.

To me, this story is a great example of how the police department in Jordan really does care about the citizens of our town. I feel lucky as a Jordan resident to have the police officers that we’ve got, and it’s nice to have a police department that is not some nameless, faceless, unforgiving and unmoving force, but that is a part of the community.

I was one of those individuals who got a ticket, and, boy, was I stinking mad, since there was no sign identifying the road as no parking. I complained to the officers there that day and had planned to follow up with a call to the police chief, when I was notified that the tickets were revoked. I'm glad they decided to revisit the issue. I still don't know what the big deal is about parking there, at least allowing it on one side; however, if they're not going to allow parking, they better have signs.
