Jordan needs to rethink their pet ordinance laws and get with the times. The police need to hold to a 2 minute & ticket someone when their dog is outside barking and barking. People who are good to their pets should be allowed to have as many pets as they want if they leash them and dont let them bark alot-todd s

By the by ... a quick visual today while walking my two dogs found two "lawns" that had more than three dogs.

My silence can be purchased.

Nobody wants to live next

Nobody wants to live next door to someone that doesn't mow their lawn, parks too many cars on their property, plays loud music and has hounds like the Bumpuses in A Christmas Story so there has to be rules and ordinances.

I would hope though that city ordinances are written better. If a limit of any type is written into one, there should always be wiggle room [letting the council determine if it applies on a case by case basis].

Maybe this would be a good time for our city government to review this and other ordinances looking for potential problems such as where they find themselves now.

There is a leash law in Jordan, but there are many people who do nt follow this rule and let their dogs run anywhere they want. I wholly support the Petersons in this. John H.

jordan is years behind

jordan is years behind rules like other cities thats why we are moving when house sells-example of this is roseville and some cities its a 2 minute dog barking law and then the owner get cited-in jordan a dog like my neighbors barks for hours and they ignore dog and drink and party,they shouldnt have one dog-my other neighbor lets his huge dogs-2 of them roam with out leases so me and others cant walk past his home-he should have not become a dog owner--if a good loving family like petersons want 15 dogs let it be done-if they walk them and dont let them bark bark ,bark-and they walk dogs daily and on LEASHES and they are sober individuals who dont party with dogs outside barking while they are drunk--so the issues in jordan should b ticket the barking dog owners and no leashed dog owners and let persons have 20 dogs if they are sober and do care for dogs-petersons please call me -i have many many issues to share with u and can help-todd severson-god bless

I remember when the ordinace

I remember when the ordinace was first taken, I believe it was about 1982 or there about. The original reason was that there were multiple persons (of whom I personally know) that had multiple dogs (more than eight). They were medium to small breed dogs.
I believe at the time that there was a question on where to draw the line. There was discussion at that time and it was decided that two would be the number. I also know that the city, police and council did not intend to punish any particualar person that had three at that time, as nothing was done to enforce the number three. The original offenders did move from the area and there has not been any issues until this time. I can not speak for either the Persons nor the Police. I do however, believe that it should not have been elevated to the level it has reached.
I am a dog lover and can relate to the Persons. I have also witnessed the problems that the police face when dealing with issues of this sort and it is best not to elevate an issue. The facts are now that the ordinance is in effect. The Media will probably not let it go away, so the council will have to remove the ordinance which I don't see happening, or the Petersons will have to find a loving home for their cute puppy. I do not think that you could actually ask the officer who enforced the ordinance to not do his/her job to the best of their ability. You can also be assured the Petersons to be distraught over the issue.
I personally would love to here that the ordinance was pulled, however I am also certain that you would find homes with five then eight then ten dogs all kenneled in one small area and then you would see the rescue on the news. Sad fact is that a number was indeed needed and people will eventually take issues with the decision, it was enforced, it was brought to the news. Lines have been drawn and who is in the right?

My best wish to all involved, there are no winners in the case.

When did the ordinance take

When did the ordinance take affect? Is it possible that the council could have fine tuned this ordinance with choice wording? What prompted the ordinance? I AM ONLY GUESSING that the council had large breed dogs in mind when the ordinance was passed. Realistically, three terrier breed dogs create much less mess and noise than two 100+ pounds dogs, yet under current ordinance, that would be allowed.
To the above comment, I agree. Will the city next impose an ordinance that limits the amount of children you can keep in you home?
It is nit picking issues like this that diminish my pride of living of Jordan. Issues like this cause us to be suspicious of our neighbors' activities, distrusting of our peace officers, and discourage community unity. These are all opposite outcomes of what National Night Out is supposed to accomplish. (I read the fox news link, doesn't that just shout "hey everyone, move to Jordan, we take your animals away!") What embarrassing media coverage for our city.
Besides, why wouldn't the city grant them a kennel license? That equals more money for the city (permit fee), and isn't money all most people really care about anymore?

Bruce Peterson called me

Bruce Peterson called me after this story was published and wanted to clarify one issue: When the family first thought they might keep a third dog, they went to the city hall and an employee told them that they could have three dogs, Peterson said, so they got the wrong impression that since there are no complaints that they could keep Jack-Jack. They based their actions on the conversation they had had.

In response, Police Chief Bob Malz later said, "As harsh as it sounds, if they were given the wrong information, that doesn't give them the right to break the law."

Why does the city think it

Why does the city think it is necessary to limit the number of pets? If the dogs are properly cared for and not a danger to the public, why not let them keep their dog. Pets become a part of the family. Asking them to give up Jack-Jack is like asking them to get rid of a child because there are too many.

Our City Council has lost sight of who they represent.... the people of Jordan.

- nothing;
- the freakishly large animals;
