The $500,000 was money that was matching money that was given from the state, which deemed it more worthy than numerous other projects that other cities tried to get funded. You couldn't just spend the money anywhere you want.

Yes! Volenteer... Vote... let's all stop sitting on our thumbs, silence is not the way. There have been many people for many years who have given time and effort to Jordan. They should be appreciated. There are people both long time residents and new that could benefit the community, let us not shut them out.

How about the $500,000 be used for something else. The $$$ is not lost, it is just reallocated for a better purpose. In the meetings I attended, the reason for redoing the intersection was never to replace the sewer underneath. The stated purpose was to allow for
more traffic to smoothly move through the intersection.
That intersection (282/21) is not the worst one in Jordan. The City Council can waste $$$ on a project that is not needed and then wants to ask the taxpayers to pay even more $$$ in taxes to give them a new City Hall. Why would we agree to give them something when the city leaders turned a deaf ear to the citizens???

Take a look at the cities comprehensive plan and if you can't attend city council meetings, I believe the meetings are televised and the minutes are on the website.

I was a part of a large group of people who attended numerous meetings creating the plan. It all there for those who are looking for answers.

How about the $500,000 in state money Jordan would lose if you didn't do the 282/21 project, how do you explain that one to the tax payers of Jordan? Especially when they are redoing the work in 5-10 years and when the 80 year old sewer underneath continues to break and back up? Tell that to the homeowners who will have their plumbing and water shut off. A very short sighted opinion, not one for the greater good of Jordan citizens.

As far as the old St John's School, if anyone chose to do anything with it they would have to gut the plumbing, asbestos, lead paint, add an elevator, add a bathroom, make it handicap accessible, gut the electric, and that doesn't even count the other cost of removal and replacement. While it's a romantic idea to keep the school as is, it just isn't a practicle one, even the leaders on the church know that one.

A committee of citizens was put together last year and worked very hard to research where to put a future city hall/library/police station. As far as I know this is the norm, the truth is that if people want to get involved with their city / school they need to step up and ask what they can do. To often people just like to complain about decisions others have made without researching the facts and without lifting a finger to bring about change that they do want.

A similar situation is the economic development in Jordan. Jordan has an EDA (Economic Development Authority) made up of citizens who have worked hard for years to entice economic growth in Jordan. In fact, there was recently an opening and only one person applied, the same person who's term had just ended. Again, I challenge anyone who has an issue to do something about it and volunteer!

Perhaps the city could take the money that they want to spend on the Hwy 282/21 project
and use it to build a Community Center including
a new City Hall?

As far as I am concerned, that is better use of
taxpayer money than a road expansion that is
not needed or wanted by the residents.

For a new City Hall, how about refurbishing
the old St. Johns School?

Maybe what the city needs to do is a strategic planning and visioning and prioritize what the citizens want and figure out ways to make the vision a reality.

I don't know what the city's priorities are. That may be my fault for not attending city council meetings, but at the same time, I would like to be informed where the city is spending its time and efforts.

If you want a good gathering space - Awakenings coffee shop is the place to be. They have the best coffee and sandwiches in town!

If they are going to build a city hall, I would rather see them save the money and have that money earning interest until they need it, rather than borrowing the money and losing money on interest from a loan.

On a side note, I walked down water street last night, and noticed all of the empty buildings... quite sad. I would like to see the city or chamber of commerce make it a priority to make water street and downtown more attractive to local businesses.

It is inevitable that at some point in time an expansion will be necessary. It is my opinion that community has been left to dwindle for some time now, however there has been a few to inspirit. I do believe that there needs to be some form of agenda set that should embrace more of a community theme, not excluding its ability for expansion. One important theme that has always been excluded is the encouragement of new business. This would allow a greater tax base and could help revive our tax revenue without increasing our already overburdened taxpayers.
We need to take hold of the reigns and steer this town in the right direction, create some new growth that will enliven our spirits and sense of community. The closest we have ever had to a community gathering place was the Gold Spot which closed some time ago. Many people from town had memories that crossed over generations. We need a place that can inspire our new generations without disregard for our past. However, we also do not need to overburden our individual tax liabilities. An agenda would be a good start, community participation a great idea and assertive economic planning a necessity.
