Here's what's been going on in and around New Prague lately, according to the New Prague Times:
- Three people were sentenced last month for mortgage fraud in the New Prague, Elko New Market, and Lonsdale areas. Found guilty in federal court of conspiring to commit mortgage fraud and money laundering in connection with a scheme involving as many as 200 residents and as much as $100 million in loan proceeds, Michael Alan Parish, Ardith Ann Parish, and Christopher David Troup of Eagan will each do time in prison, followed by three years each on supervised release.
- The Mary J. Tikalsky Reading Room opened at the New Prague library last month. It is named for a longtime businesswoman.
- Wyatt Rech, a 7-year-old cancer survivor from Montgomery, met President George W. Bush during the signing into law of the Conquer Childhood Cancer Act. Rech was pictured with President Bush on pages 1 and 16 of the Times, and Wade Young of the Montgomery Messenger wrote a lengthy story.
- Work progresses on New Prague's emergency services center, located along Highway 21.
- St. Wenceslaus Church held its annual festival earlier this month. Among other things, the event had polka and poker.
- The Scott County Fair had a record day on the Saturday of the event, Dave Minar told the Times. He also said that beer and concessions sales were successful, what with the newly combined churches food court and the recently relocated beer garden.
- Michael Johnson is learning the ropes as New Prague's newest employee. He took over for Jerry Bohnsack as the city administrator. Bohnsack had served 33 years in the position.
- New Prague's school district budget is looking up. The schools spent $373,000 less than was budgeted, according to a preliminary estimate publicized last month.
- Kolacky Days was in its 74th year.
