Here's what's been going on in and around New Prague lately, according to the New Prague Times:
- New Prague allowed Miller's Tap to have a patio in the alley east of
the bar, prompting the planning commission and city council to discuss concerns about the possibility of people walking from bar to bar with alcoholic drinks. New Prague police officers issued six citations during one weekend last month for drinking on city sidewalks. Twice, the police stopped people who turned out to be carrying cups of water.
- On Memorial Day, 19-year-old Daniel J. Otto, the son of Willis "Bill"
Otto of Anchorage, Alaska, and Diane Otte of New Prague, died in a
motorcycle crash in Ramona, Calif., a suburb of San Diego. Daniel
enlisted as a U.S. Navy sailor as a junior in high school in 2006. "I
want to serve my country," he told the Times last year. "I figured other people have fought for my freedom, so why shouldn't I do the same?"
- Two hundred sixty-seven New Prague High School students graduated last weekend.
- As a freshman, Allen Friedges asked his father if he could drive a tractor to school. His father, Allen, said maybe on his last day of school, hoping he'd forget about the idea during the following years. The student didn't, and he took the tractor on a 42-minute drive from Webster to school on his final day of classes June 3. Three other students had the same idea.
- After the New Prague boys and girls track-and-field teams won their section titles, several members of the teams went to state. They are Danielle Busch, Kristin Carr, Drew Feuk, Dustin Haeg, Jenny Hendricks, Tony Johnson, Rena Kneeland, Adam Michel, Makayla Reimers, Elly Reinke, Taylor Rookaird, and Britt Rynda.
- In town ball play, Elko through a no-hitter against St. Benedict.
