Jordan's 2008 comprehensive plan is out for formal review by adjacent units of local government and for informal review by the Metropolitan Council.
The comprehensive plan is a compilation of policy statements, goals, standards, and maps for guiding the overall development and redevelopment of the city of Jordan. It is an 11-chapter document that details Jordan's history, physical profile, demographic trends and assumptions, housing, economic development, land use, transportation issues, parks, trails, and recreation, facilities, public utilities, and implementation tools. Three noteworthy additions are neighborhood commercial developments, an increased number of parks, and a new highway industrial park.
The comp plan is updated every decade. This year's update plans growth through 2030, when the city's population is projected to be about three times as large as its current 5,146.
"It's a very thorough document," said Joanne Foust, a city consultant with Municipal Development Group.
Officials from Scott County and Jordan Public Schools, as well as Sand Creek and St. Lawrence townships, participated as an advisory committee, and the public was given an opportunity to review the plan at the city hall and comment during a public hearing.
Mayor Ron Jabs said the comp plan update was a lot of work.
"This is a very important document for our city," Jabs said. "It kind of lays out our future."
Tonight, the Jordan City Council authorized updating the plan, voting 5-0 in the absence of councilmembers Barry Ullmann and David Hanson.
