This morning, with flames heating up in a tin-sided granary in Sand Creek Township and the wind blowing to the south toward a dry cornfield, two dozen firefighters worked together against the blaze. In this slide show, see the Jordan Fire Department in action:
Fire totaled a small granary in Sand Creek Township this morning.
The Jordan and Belle Plaine fire departments and the Scott County Sheriff's Office responded after dispatch put out a call at 8:46 a.m. Three minutes later, several fire trucks and as many as 25 firefighters began working to quell the flames, which had engulfed the storage shed.
Black smoke could be seen from the River Ridge neighborhood when the call went out, but by about 10 a.m., the fire had been doused.
Thirty years ago, Tom Colling, Jewel Muhlhausen, and Robert Landela won the annual Fire Prevention Week poster contest.

A 46-year-old man from St. Lawrence Township is accused of burning his own home after the sheriff sold it in a foreclosure sale.
Scott County District Court charged Jerry Lee Pilsner with felony arson and theft in connection with a fire that destroyed his home at 21846 Sielaff Drive on Jan. 28, according to the Belle Plaine Herald. Early next month, Pilsner is scheduled to make his first court appearance in the case.
Thirty years ago, the rural Jordan home of Bob Pexa went up in flames. Laverne Schaak, soon to be married to Tim Verhoeven, lived in one of the house's apartments, which was gutted by flames and the couple lost most of their shower gifts.

Early this morning, the Minnesota State Patrol, the Jordan police and fire departments, and Allina Ambulance responded to a car crash on Highway 169, near its intersection with166th St. in Sand Creek Township, north of Jordan.
The crash occurred prior to 6 a.m., and personal injuries were involved.
At 7 a.m., traffic was still backed up for 1 mile south of the accident.
