All about Scott County Fair (video)

Those who work at the Scott County Fair Office in St. Lawrence Township, near Jordan, took the Jordan Independent staff on a tour of the grounds and told about their favorite things at the fair. This year's county fair runs July 23-27. Check out these videos:

300 bicyclists but more Jordan needed

Of almost 300 bicyclists who rode in the Jordan Valley Bike Tour, only a few were from town. Your local newspaper editor interviewed several of them, upon their returns from a day of street riding, and most of them agreed that more Jordan bicyclists should support the Jordan Area Chamber of Commerce-sponsored bike tour, which is organized with the purpose of eventually expanding the trails system in the area.

Here's what bicyclists had to say last Saturday:

Tubing rapids of Sand Creek (video)

While some people see Sand Creek as a trickle of water slowly flowing past picturesque bluffs, into the woods, and through a golf course, rural backyards, and a park near Jordan, the river offers a surprisingly speedly stretch of rapids.

For the best ride on an inner tube, start near Sawmill Woods and take a windy 23-minute trip to the state rest stop along Highway 21. It's a fairly quick trip, even at this time of year, or especially after a good spring rainfall. Watch my latest, giddiest tube ride:

Groundbreaking for the fire hall expansion (video)

Next week, excavation begins at the construction site for Jordan's fire hall renovation and expansion project. It is expected to take 18 months to complete.

A delegation of people involved in the project gathered at the on the site this morning for a groundbreaking ceremony. Mayor Ron Jabs gave an impromptu speech to the helmet-donning, shovel-wielding group, which included Finance Director Tom Nikunen, City Administrator Ed Shukle, City Engineer Carol Caron, Councilmember Jeanne Marnoff, JEA Architects president Jack Anderson, project manager Gopher State Contractors project manager and vice president Jayson J. Revoir, Councilmember Mike Shaw, Fire Chief Steve Kochlin, Councilmember Sally Schultz, and fire department building committee chairman Mike Briese.

Here's a video of the event and the mayor's speech:

A view of the waterfall (video)

Take a look at the Sand Creek waterfall at Lagoon Park in Jordan. This video was taken Saturday, June 21.

At first, people didn't know C-3PO was a man (video)

British actor Anthony Daniels had been a thespian for only two years when he started a career that hasn’t stopped. He took a job as C-3PO (nickname Threepio), the fussy, comic interpreter droid in George Lucas’ “Star Wars.”

Video from JHS graduation

Jordan High School said goodbye to 84 seniors during their graduation ceremony last week. Here are some video clips from the graduation ceremony.

The class song was “For Good.”

The ceremony included recognition for students who were awarded scholarships.

St. John’s sings of water

When the students at St. John the Baptist Catholic School held their spring concert May 28, they were signing about God’s gift of water. Here are some of their song selections:
