New home growth slows (and other happenings in and around Belle Plaine)July 8, 2008 - 12:00pm — Mathias BadenHere's what's been going on in and around Belle Plaine lately, according to the Belle Plaine Herald: - Belle Plaine issued four permits for new home during the first six months of the year. Ten years ago, the city saw the number more than double, increasing from 19 in 1997 to 46 in 1998. - The Belle Plaine school board will dip into its budget reserves, despite receiving a surprise one-time increase in funding from the state. - Three seats for the Belle Plaine City Council are open. Former Councilmember Cary Coop was the first to file. Did you know? Scott County FairJuly 5, 2008 - 5:00am — Mathias BadenDid you know the Scott County Fair started in the city of Jordan in 1915? Originally, the county fair was at a park owned by the Jordan brewery. You might know the area as the Mini-Met. The fair later moved to its current location along 190th Street in St. Lawrence Township, near the intersection of highways 282 and 169 in Jordan. For more information, go to www.scottcountyfair.com/fairhistory.php. Magazine lists Jordan as one of Cities’ best places to liveJuly 4, 2008 - 10:38am — BrandonMathias Baden reports: “A ways out there, but an appealing combination of pastoral and urban.” Sound familiar, like someone is mentioning a little town you might have in mind? In the July edition of Mpls St Paul magazine, Brian Lambert, Shawn Gilliam, and Sarah Howard combined to write an article about the best places to live in the Twin Cities, and Jordan made the list of 20 “great neighborhoods.” The writers took into account crime statistics, school quality ratings, subjective insights of real estate industry professionals, and historical home sales. All about Scott County Fair (video)July 3, 2008 - 10:36am — Mathias BadenThose who work at the Scott County Fair Office in St. Lawrence Township, near Jordan, took the Jordan Independent staff on a tour of the grounds and told about their favorite things at the fair. This year's county fair runs July 23-27. Check out these videos: 300 bicyclists but more Jordan neededJune 28, 2008 - 9:00am — Mathias BadenOf almost 300 bicyclists who rode in the Jordan Valley Bike Tour, only a few were from town. Your local newspaper editor interviewed several of them, upon their returns from a day of street riding, and most of them agreed that more Jordan bicyclists should support the Jordan Area Chamber of Commerce-sponsored bike tour, which is organized with the purpose of eventually expanding the trails system in the area. Here's what bicyclists had to say last Saturday: Tubing rapids of Sand Creek (video)June 27, 2008 - 10:32am — Mathias BadenWhile some people see Sand Creek as a trickle of water slowly flowing past picturesque bluffs, into the woods, and through a golf course, rural backyards, and a park near Jordan, the river offers a surprisingly speedly stretch of rapids. For the best ride on an inner tube, start near Sawmill Woods and take a windy 23-minute trip to the state rest stop along Highway 21. It's a fairly quick trip, even at this time of year, or especially after a good spring rainfall. Watch my latest, giddiest tube ride: Catching minnows by handJune 27, 2008 - 10:31am — BrandonJordan residents Jonathan Huss, 8, and Brandon Feltmann, 10, scoured the waters of the Mill Pond, catching tiny tadpoles. “They’re in big groups,” Feltmann said. “There were so many, they looked like rocks.” Here’s how their fishing trip went down: Luke Oellrich of Jordan casts his fishing line from the shore of the Mill Pond in Lagoon Park. He'd taken part in a demonstration by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. As the park filled up with attendees of Pork in the Park last weekend, Oellrich, his brother Jack, and his parents, John and Ann, found a quiet spot to continue fishing. The Mill Pond underwent an $838,000 restoration project last winter and this summer, and residents are enjoying the outcome. (Photo by Mathias Baden) Have a photo you'd like to see on the front page? Send it to snapshots@jordannews.com At first, people didn't know C-3PO was a man (video)June 21, 2008 - 5:00am — Mathias BadenBritish actor Anthony Daniels had been a thespian for only two years when he started a career that hasn’t stopped. He took a job as C-3PO (nickname Threepio), the fussy, comic interpreter droid in George Lucas’ “Star Wars.” |
