Although it isn't a large portion of the Jordan's city budget, the city council frequently asks about the status of building permit revenues, which are significantly down this year. In the 2008 budget, the city planned for $230,100 in proceeds from building permits, expecting the economy to slowly pick up. But even a conservative projection wasn't small enough. New Prague allows restaurants in strip mallAugust 17, 2008 - 2:44pm — Mathias BadenTwo of the newest additions to New Prague are likely to be a Mexican restaurant and a bakery. After hearing complaints against and support for proposal last week, the New Prague City Council approved a conditional-use permit for the East Town Plaza strip mall to include restaurants in its leased spaces, according to the New Prague Times. The planning commission had recommended against the move. Cambria gets close to expansion in Belle Plaine (and other happenings in and around Belle Plaine)August 16, 2008 - 2:23pm — Mathias BadenHere's what's been going on in and around Belle Plaine lately, according to the Belle Plaine Herald: - Cambria's plan: Expand into the former Excelsior-Henderson building along Highway 169 in Belle Plaine but also maintain its current building along Main Street in Belle Plaine. The sale of the building along the highway, which will be used for manufacturing and storage of countertops, is expected soon. Eventually, the company is promising, Cambria will bring 100 new jobs to Belle Plaine. Court sentences 3 people in $100M mortgage fraud (and other happenings in and around New Prague)August 16, 2008 - 11:34am — Mathias BadenHere's what's been going on in and around New Prague lately, according to the New Prague Times: - Three people were sentenced last month for mortgage fraud in the New Prague, Elko New Market, and Lonsdale areas. Found guilty in federal court of conspiring to commit mortgage fraud and money laundering in connection with a scheme involving as many as 200 residents and as much as $100 million in loan proceeds, Michael Alan Parish, Ardith Ann Parish, and Christopher David Troup of Eagan will each do time in prison, followed by three years each on supervised release. Correction: Elite Waste DisposalAugust 14, 2008 - 12:14pm — Mathias BadenAn error was printed on pages 1-2 of the Aug. 14 issue of the Jordan Independent. Elite Waste Disposal will pick up garbage on a weekly basis and recycling every other week, just as Waste Management has for the past 14 years.
